Early Years
Indisputably one of the most well-known and recognised figures in all of Asteria, Valexandre Henri Bellegrette was born on the 16th of Cherish, 540, in the small town of Lacustra, located on the northern bank of Lake Parashaw in Murdas. The eldest son of a minor noble family, Valexandre exhibited remarkable intelligence and a keen interest in military strategy and politics from a young age. His early education was overseen by private tutors, who noted his prodigious talent for languages and history. It was often remarked that the boy seemed almost to be able to hear a language one day, and speak it the next.
At the age of just 12 seasons, Valexandre was sent to the prestigious Academy of Verdancia, where he continued to excel in his studies, particularly in mathematics and classical literature. His time at the academy was also marked by his growing interest in the revolutionary ideals sweeping across Asteria. He became an ardent supporter of the principles of equality, secularism, and national pride, which he would later use to shape his political ideology.
Rise to Power During the Revolution
In 550, when Valexandre was 20 seasons old, Murdas became engulfed in revolutionary fervour. The old monarchy, burdened by debt and widespread discontent, was on the brink of collapse. Inspired by the revolutionaries in neighbouring Luvaine, Valexandre joined the revolutionary forces, and quickly distinguished himself by way of his tactical brilliance and charismatic leadership.
During the early years of the revolution, Valexandre played a key role in several crucial battles, leading the revolutionary army to victory against royalist forces. His success on the battlefield and his eloquence in political debates earned him the admiration of his peers and the common people alike.
By 554, the revolutionary government was struggling to maintain control amidst internal strife and external threats. Recognising Valexandre's military prowess and political acumen, the leaders of the revolution appointed him as the commander-in-chief of the revolutionary armies. His leadership proved decisive in quelling internal uprisings and defending Murdas from foreign invaders.
In 555, following a series of decisive military victories, the abdication of the last monarch, and a brilliantly executed bloodless coup, the revolutionary government proclaimed Valexandre as the First Consul of Murdas, granting him near-dictatorial powers to restore stability and order.
Military Victories and Reign as Emperor
Politically, Valexandre's tenure as First Consul was marked by sweeping reforms aimed at consolidating his power and modernizing the state. Militarily, it saw him embarking on an expansionist campaign under the guise of “reclaiming rightful Murdasian land”. This included the occupation of Grendia, long asserted to be legally part of Murdas, and the retaking of former colonial land in Circenzio. In 559, with popular support and the endorsement of the military, Valexandre declared himself Emperor of Murdas, establishing a new imperial regime.
As Emperor, Valexandre embarked on a series of ambitious military campaigns to further expand Murdas's territory and influence beyond his originally stated goals of reclamation. His strategic genius led to numerous victories, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest military commanders of his time. Key victories included the Battle of Four Crowns in 559, where his forces decisively defeated a coalition of neighbouring states, and the Siege of Torrente in 560, which secured Murdasian control over vital trade routes through Laprel.
Under Valexandre's rule, Murdas has experienced unprecedented economic growth and political stability. His legal reforms, embodied in the Codex Valexandre, provided a uniform legal framework that promoted civil rights, property protections, and equality under the law. His emphasis on education and infrastructure development has further strengthened the nation's prosperity and economic future.
Despite his autocratic tendencies, Valexandre is popular among his subjects, who see him as a stabilizing force and a champion of the revolutionary ideals that brought him to power in the first place. His reign has been marked by a blend of progressive reforms and ruthless efficiency, which have ensured the continued dominance of Murdas in Asterian affairs.
Description of Emperor Valexandre
Emperor Valexandre is a strikingly handsome and imposing figure. Standing at 6 feet tall, he has a commanding presence accentuated by his broad shoulders and athletic build. His piercing green eyes are said to reflect both his intellectual intensity and his unyielding determination. Valexandre's face is characterized by sharp, aristocratic features, with high cheekbones and a strong, square jaw.
The Emperor maintains a meticulous appearance, always clean shaved, with his dark brown hair neatly styled and often tied back in a braid. Valexandre is known for his impeccable taste in clothing, favouring military uniforms adorned with medals and insignia that symbolise his numerous victories and his imperial authority. In more informal settings, he is frequently seen wearing tailored suits of fine fabrics, often in dark hues that convey both elegance and authority.
Despite his outwardly stern and authoritative demeanour, those who know Valexandre personally speak of his charisma and his ability to inspire loyalty and devotion among his followers. His oratory skills are legendary, capable of rousing both his troops and the general populace with speeches that blend eloquence and intelligence with a clear vision for Murdas's future.
Personal Life
For a man whose name has become synonymous with war, revolution and empire, surprisingly little is known about Valexandre's private life. He has always guarded it carefully, allowing only a small circle of people to see the man behind the Emperor.
His marriage to Isabelle Varenne, the daughter of a powerful Murdasian family, began largely as a political alliance. Over time, however, the relationship developed into something considerably more genuine. Isabelle is one of the few people willing to disagree with Valexandre openly, and he appears to respect her for precisely that reason. Their marriage remains both a personal relationship and a valuable political partnership.
They had three children. Their first, a daughter named Élise, died of illness while still very young, during one of Valexandre's early military campaigns. Hearing of her illness, Valexandre immediately returned home, but arrived too late to say goodbye. The loss affected him deeply, and those who knew him at the time describe a period of unusual withdrawal before he threw himself once again into his work.
His two surviving children, Lucien and Amélie, have been raised in considerably different circumstances. Valexandre is a devoted father and makes time for them whenever his duties permit. He reads to them, teaches them history and mathematics, and encourages them to question rather than simply obey. Those who have witnessed him with his children describe a markedly different man from the stern figure seen in portraits: affectionate, patient and occasionally playful.
He is fiercely protective of them, however, and takes considerable care to ensure that his family cannot be used against him. The loss of Élise has left him acutely aware that there are some things even power cannot prevent.
Outside his family, Valexandre keeps a surprisingly small circle of genuine friends. He is surrounded by ministers, officers, nobles and admirers, but few are permitted to know him well. He has always preferred capable people who can challenge him to those who merely flatter him, and several of his closest relationships have grown from political or military alliances.
This makes it difficult to determine where Valexandre's personal feelings end and his political calculations begin. He is capable of genuine affection and loyalty, but he is also a man who instinctively recognises the value of every relationship he forms.
Those who love him see this as simply another aspect of his extraordinary ability to understand people. Those who hate him see it as evidence that even those closest to him are ultimately pieces upon his political board.
Perhaps the truth lies somewhere between the two.
Whatever else Valexandre may become in the history books, to his surviving children he remains something much simpler: their father. And somewhere within the Emperor, remembered but rarely mentioned, remains the young father who lost his daughter Élise and discovered that there are some battles that even he cannot win.
In sum, Emperor Valexandre is a complex and multifaceted leader, whose early embrace of revolutionary ideals and subsequent rise to imperial power have left an indelible mark on Murdas and its history, as well as that of Asteria as a whole.
The Hidden Truth
While it is undoubtedly true that Valexandre is an accomplished politician, and an outstanding military mind, these things are not the full reason behind his rise to power. It is a closely guarded secret that Valexandre was born with the powers of the Shu’vai, making him capable of using Lumere to influence, and even control, the minds of others, as well as shaping its raw power into any colour of Mere he may require. His parents recognised his ability with Lumere at an early age, but rather than turning him over to the authorities, as the laws of Murdas dictate, they taught him instead to hide his power from those around him. Given the rise of their political influence and financial holdings following his birth, it is clear that they were also willing to exploit his abilities to their own gain.
As Valexandre grew in both stature and intelligence, he quickly learnt how to combine his natural good looks and winning personality with his mind influencing powers to bend people to his will. Never pushing too hard, Valexandre would instead simply ease people’s concerns, gently turning their minds to be more inclined towards him, and then would use the power of his words and charisma to bring them over to his side.
During his time at Verdancia Academy, Valexandre also gained a number of truly devout followers. Powerful men and women in their own right, they pledged their undying loyalty to the young aristocrat, vowing to aid him in achieving his goals no matter the cost. Following this, several prominent rivals of Valexandre either dropped out of the academy, disappeared, or turned up dead. No link to Valexandre was ever established, and his alibies, in the rare instances they were required, were always iron clad and undeniable. After all, young Valexandre was never one to carry out his own dirty work. And thus, the Order of the White Raven was born, an organisation that still carries out the Emperor’s secret biddings to this day.
This is not to say that Valexandre was incapable of resolving his own disputes, should the occasion call for it. During his early years as a revolutionary, Valexandre served as a Captain under General Joset Rousay, a renowned military officer, but one with a certain level of timidity when it came to fighting his fellow Murdasians. In an early battle against royalist forces, Rousay ordered his troops to withdraw from the field, rather than inflict casualties upon his countrymen. Valexandre was enraged by what he saw as a traitorous act of cowardice, and that evening the sound of a gunshot brought guards and officers rushing to the General’s tent. Rousay was found dead, the smoking pistol still clutched in his hand, and a hastily penned letter, naming Valexandre as his successor, on the table before him. Many who knew the General well claimed he would never take his own life, no matter the circumstances, and yet the evidence seemed irrefutable. The following day, the newly appointed General Valexandre led the revolutionary forces in a dawn raid against the royalist troops, resulting in both a bloody massacre, and the first decisive victory of General Valexandre’s career.
In the following years, Valexandre’s power and influence has only grown. While he still prefers the subtle approach, to win his rivals over to his way of thinking with words and conviction, a long line of mysterious deaths and disappearances follows in his wake. While few could ever point to anything approaching actual evidence, it is a well acknowledged “fact” that the eyes and ears of the White Ravens are everywhere, and that to speak out against the Emperor is to risk your life.
With his vast political power, his army of dogmatic followers, and his ability to manipulate the mind controlling power of Lumere, Emperor Valexandre is the closest thing to a true Shu’vai to have walked the earth in over five centuries. His capabilities and intelligence should never be underestimated. He is, without a doubt, the most powerful and dangerous person in any room, save for possibly the gods themselves.
